REPORTED SPEECH (2)
Reported questions
Reported questions have a different word order to other reported sentences
1
. With question words (
who, where, when, what, why, how
) we omit
do/does/did
and the
question mark (?) and change other words as with normal reported speech:
1.
If there are no question words, we must add
if/whether:
DIRECT: Do you like coffee?
REPORTED: He asked me if/whether I liked coffee.
2.
We can also use the phrase
wanted to know
:
DIRECT: Do you play football or tennis?
