GOLF
Golf is played over a series of holes called a golf course. Most golf courses are made up of 18
holes, but some have 9 holes. Each golf course is unique in size, shape, length, hazards, and
each hole on a given golf course is unique.
Tee Area: This is where play begins. The golf ball may be placed on a tee for the first shot of
the hole.
Green: This is the area where the hole is located. The grass on the green is cut short and
greens are very smooth to allow the ball to roll.
Hole: The hole is a cup that is inserted into the ground. There is a flag that sticks out of the
hole to allow golfers to see it from a distance.
Hazards: Many holes are made more difficult with hazards like ponds and sand traps. These
are to be avoided by the golfer.
Golf starts at the tee area. A player may place the ball on a golf tee in order to get a better
shot. This first shot is called a drive.
The next series of shots are to advance the golf ball close to or on the green. When the ball
gets close to the green the golfer will try to hit the ball such that it hits the green area and
comes to a stop near the hole.
Once the golf ball is on the green, the golfer will use the putter (a flat type of club). With the
putter the golfer will try to roll the ball into the hole.
The two main items that a golfer needs to play golf are a golf club and a golf ball. Most
golfers have multiple golf clubs that are specialized for different shots. Each golfer can carry
up to 14 golf clubs in their bag.
Golf balls have a minimum diameter (1.68 inches) and weight (1.62 ounces) defined by the
rules. The materials that the ball is made of will affect the characteristics of the ball when hit.
A harder ball will travel further, but a softer ball will allow the golfer more control over spin
and distance.
In addition to the mandatory golf clubs and balls, golfers will also need a bag to carry their
clubs and other extras (like balls and tees).
Most golfers also wear special golf shoes that have spikes on the soles to help them grip the
ground and keep their balance while swinging the club. Another helpful piece of equipment is
the glove. A towel is a good idea to clean off the golf ball and/or the club head. If rain is a
possibility, it's a good idea to have an umbrella as well.

TENNIS
Tennis is one of the most popular individual sports in the world. In tennis the player uses a
racquet to hit a ball over a net into the opponents court. The ball must be kept in play and can
only bounce one time on the court surface before the opponent must strike the ball back over
the net. The standard ball is made up of felt over hollow rubber. Tennis is often played with
one player per side (singles) or with two players per side (doubles).
The basic area where tennis is played is called the court. This is a rectangular flat surface
made of concrete, grass or clay. The standard tennis court is 78 feet long and 27 feet wide for
singles matches. For doubles matches the width of the court is increased to 36 feet. A 3 feet 6
inch high net is stretched across the court, dividing the court in half. Tennis courts can be
found in public parks, schools, and country clubs throughout the world. They can be outside
or inside allowing for fresh air when the weather is good and year round play when the
weather is bad.
