LANGUAGE AND DESIRE
Language and Desire
is an original and intriguing exploration into the language
we use to talk about and express romantic and sexual desire.
The contributors use a rich variety of approaches to analyse the features and
patterns of this discourse, including empirical linguistics and discourse
analysis. They engage directly with issues in critical linguistics, women’s
studies and gender studies. In particular they investigate:
•
the language used to encode romantic and sexual desire;
•
the attitudes and assumptions about romantic and sexual desire that are
embodied in English;
•
the relations between language and the construction of identities based
upon manifestations of desire.
Contributors include:
Sara Mills, Joanna Channell, Mary Talbot and
Michael Hoey.
Language and Desire
will attract a varied readership including students of
linguistics, women’s studies, gender studies, and lesbian and gay studies.
Keith Harvey
is a lecturer in Applied Linguistics at the University of East
Anglia.
Celia Shalom
is a lecturer in English Language and Applied Lin-
guistics in the English Language Studies Unit at the University of Liverpool.
